THE ORIGIN

The word Tourbillon comes from the French meaning “whirlwind”.

The Swiss watchmaker Abraham Louis Breguet designed the Tourbillon mechanism and it was patented in 1801 and is one of the masterpieces of watchmaking art. At that time, watches were pocket watches and most of the time the clock remained in an upright position, which caused the regular rhythm of the watch to be altered and hence the reason why it lost precision. The Tourbillo movement compensated for the effects of gravity and improved accuracy.

OPERATION

Breguet developed a mechanism whose function is to compensate for the deflection generated by the force of gravity on the flywheel. In this way he developed a cage that has the flywheel inside as well as the exhaust and all this rotates on the same axis of the cage. In this way, even though the clock remains in the same position, the system rotates on its own axis and this cancels out the difference generated by gravity.
